Full Mouth Rehabilitation with the Cross-Arch Fixed Dental Prosthesis, Removable Partial Denture and Implants of a Patient with Chronic Periodontitis: a Case Report

Abstract

|
If the discontinuity of the dentition caused by tooth loss following chronic periodontitis is neglected for a long period of time, the occlusion collapses due to movement of the opposing dentition and the adjacent dentition. As a result, the interarch relationship and the occlusal plane is altered. It is generally recommended that the natural teeth be maintained when treating patients with periodontal disease with reduced periodontal support. However, extraction is inevitable in cases which the prognosis is poor due to periodontal disease and prosthetic longevity. When there are only a few remaining teeth within the upper and lower jaws, cross arch splinting can be applied to distribute the occlusal force evenly over the entire dentition, avoiding the situation where the overload is applied to only a specific tooth. This clinical report describes the treatment of a patient with severe chronic periodontitis having a few remaining teeth by using Cross-Arch Fixed Dental Prosthesis, Removable Partial Denture and implants.
